How to transfer photos from iPhone to Mac

Connect your iPhone with a USB cable and import into Photos if you want a Mac photo library, or use Image Capture if you want files in a folder. AirDrop suits a small selection, while iCloud Photos keeps your library in sync. Before a cable import, choose Keep Originals in the iPhone’s Photos settings if preserving the source format matters more than getting compatible JPEG copies.
Choose what you want to keep
The destination matters as much as the connection. A folder of files and a Photos library serve different purposes, especially once Live Photos and edits enter the picture.
| Route | Destination | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Photos over USB | Mac Photos library | USB import can convert formats unless you choose Keep Originals |
| Image Capture | A folder you choose | A Live Photo arrives as a still image and a video |
| AirDrop | Selected items sent to your Mac | Sharing options control conversion and whether edit history travels |
| iCloud Photos | A synced Photos library | Originals and edits sync, but deletions sync too |
Start with Apple’s built-in tools. If a Photos library or a straightforward folder import meets the need, you can stop there.
Import into Photos over USB
For a cable import into your Mac library, follow Apple’s Photos import steps.
- Connect the iPhone to your Mac with a USB cable.
- Click Allow if the Mac asks to connect the accessory, unlock the iPhone, and tap Trust if asked.
- Open Photos on the Mac and select the iPhone in its sidebar if the Import screen does not appear.
- Choose an existing album or create one beside Album.
- Select pictures and click Import Selected, or use Import All New Items. Wait for completion before disconnecting.
Afterward, open an imported photo and compare it with the phone. Include an edited picture and a Live Photo in your first small batch, rather than discovering a mismatch after moving everything.
Photos also provides a folder route after import. Select items and choose File > Export > Export Unmodified Original to export in their imported format. For a JPEG copy, use File > Export > Export [number] Photos and choose JPEG. Apple’s export guide distinguishes these operations; exporting an original is a different choice from making a shareable copy.
Save directly to a folder with Image Capture
Open Image Capture with the iPhone connected and unlocked, then select the phone under Devices. Choose your destination from Import To, using Other for a folder elsewhere, select the files, and click Download or Download All. Apple’s Image Capture guide documents both the folder picker and the two-file Live Photo output.
Keep the still image and its video together. Two files for one Live Photo are expected, so a larger file count does not by itself mean that the import created duplicates.
Image Capture is enough when you simply need local files. Leave deletion for after checking the destination, especially if the same phone also uses iCloud Photos.
Send a small selection with AirDrop
On the iPhone, select pictures in Photos, tap the Share button, and open Options before choosing AirDrop and your Mac. The iOS 26 sharing guide gives three format choices: Automatic selects a format for the destination, Current prevents conversion, and Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV.
Turn on All Photos Data when you need the original file with edit history and metadata. Format preservation and edit-history preservation are separate settings, so Current alone does not request everything that All Photos Data includes.
For Live Photos, check the result in a destination that supports them. Apple says unsupported devices or services receive a still photo. Do not treat a JPEG that looks correct as proof that its motion also arrived.
Use iCloud Photos for a continuing library
If both devices already use iCloud Photos, you do not need another cable import for each new picture. It keeps original formats, full-resolution media and Live Photos in iCloud, and carries edits between devices. On the Mac, open Photos > Settings > iCloud and select Download Originals to this Mac when you want full-size local copies. These settings are covered in Apple’s iCloud Photos guide.
This is a synced library, so deleting on the phone also deletes from other devices using iCloud Photos. For an independent folder copy before removing phone pictures, follow the separate guide to deleting iPhone photos after Mac export.
Why one photo can become several files
A phone’s photo grid counts pictures, not every underlying file. Live Photos have a still component and a video component, while an edited photo can expose both its original and an edited render in DCIM. Yado’s released library handling accounts for pairs such as IMG_1234.HEIC and IMG_E1234.HEIC, and for edited screenshots whose original PNG accompanies a rendered JPG.
The render is the visible edited result. Keeping it is useful when you want the crop or adjustments as you saw them, while keeping the original preserves the source image. Those two files alone should not be treated as a portable Photos editing history; Apple explicitly provides edit-history sharing through All Photos Data.

HEIC introduces another distinction. Apple documents that USB imports into Photos or Image Capture may convert HEIF images to JPEG and HEVC videos to H.264. To prevent that conversion, open Settings > Apps > Photos on the iPhone, scroll down, and tap Keep Originals. This preserves the transfer format; it does not download missing iCloud originals. See Apple’s format guide.
Do not delete an IMG_E file merely because another filename looks similar. Establish which files belong to one picture before using a duplicate-photo cleanup workflow.
Export an album with Yado
Yado is useful when you want album browsing and repeatable exports to folders, with a separate verification step before phone deletion. Its Photos tab requires a USB cable, even when the phone is otherwise connected wirelessly.
- Open Photos in Yado and keep Library selected.
- Open the Recents dropdown and choose the album you want.
- Click Select Photos and tick the pictures to export.
- Click Export to Mac, pick a destination, then click Choose Folder.
- Open the completed export in Finder and check representative pictures and videos.
An edited photo appears as one tile using its render, and a burst appears as one tile using its cover. Selecting a tile exports its associated listed files, with related Live Photo components included. One selected tile can therefore produce several files without representing several independent photos.
Under Settings, Photo Export Names offers Original Name and Capture Date. Original Name is the default and retains the phone’s folder paths and names; Capture Date uses names such as 2026-10-24 13.05.12.HEIC. Filename collisions receive distinct names instead of overwriting existing files.
Filter > Not Exported narrows the library using the remembered export folder for that phone. It does not search every folder on your Mac for earlier copies.
Check the export and recover an interruption
Yado checks each downloaded file’s size and records a content digest with its export entry. Before deleting from the iPhone, it checks the current Mac file against that record again, including its digest. If the file changed, export it again before deletion.
With iCloud Photos enabled, or its state unknown, Yado additionally requires evidence of the original’s size before allowing removal. A successful copy of a smaller local version is not enough.
An interrupted export keeps completed files and per-file manifest checkpoints. If Continue Export is offered, use it. After reconnecting or reopening the app, select the pictures again and choose the same parent destination; recorded completed files can be reused, while unfinished files are copied again. Keep the generated export folder and its manifest files together. This resumes work by file, rather than promising to resume halfway through a video.
When the phone or import is not ready
If the phone does not appear, unlock it, respond to the Trust prompt, and check the cable connection. If an import stalls, try a small selection with the device awake before retrying the whole collection.
Missing pictures can have a different cause. With Optimize Storage enabled, the phone can hold smaller versions while originals remain in iCloud. Yado exports files available on the phone and does not fetch cloud-only originals. For the complete cloud library, use iCloud Photos on the Mac and download originals there.
Before calling the transfer complete, compare an ordinary photo, an edited photo, a Live Photo and a video with their phone versions. Check playback and the files you intended to keep, then make another copy of the export before considering deletion. If storage pressure started the task, the iPhone storage guide covers the next decision.
