Which apps to delete on iPhone, and how to organize what stays

Storage · October 27, 2026 · 7 min read

Start in Settings, open General, then iPhone Storage, and review the space used by apps you no longer need. Choose Offload App when you want to keep its documents and data, or Delete App when you intend to remove those too. If the problem is a crowded Home Screen, move icons to App Library instead of deleting the apps.

Start with the iPhone's storage list

Apple's built-in storage view is enough for reviewing a few apps. Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage, and tap an app to inspect its storage before choosing an action. Apple distinguishes the app itself from the documents and data it holds, although cached and temporary data may not be included in the reported usage. Apple's storage guide explains those categories.

Begin with apps that take substantial space and have no remaining purpose for you. Before removing one, open it and check for files or records you still need. If the data matters, export it through the app's own facilities where available; a local iPhone backup is a separate preparation step, not a promise that a deleted app can be downloaded again.

If apps account for little of the occupied space, stop working down that list. The iPhone storage guide covers a wider review, so you can address the category actually occupying the phone.

How offloading differs from deleting

Offloading removes the app while retaining its documents and data on the iPhone. Deleting removes the app and its related local data. Removing an icon from the Home Screen keeps the app in App Library, so that operation changes where you find it rather than reclaiming its installation space.

That distinction explains why offloading can recover less than the total you associate with an app. Its retained data still occupies storage. When documents account for most of the space, inspect those documents before deciding whether preserving them is useful.

For automatic offloading on iOS 26, open Settings, then Apps, then App Store, and enable Offload Unused Apps. When storage is low, iPhone can remove unused apps while keeping their data, and a cloud-marked icon remains for reinstalling. Apple's iOS 26 storage instructions describe this behavior.

Reinstallation depends on the app still being available in the App Store. Before offloading an old app you rely on, check that you can still obtain it; keeping its documents does not supply the missing application. Apple states this availability condition in its App Store settings guide.

Decide using purpose, size and maintenance

An app's size tells you the potential storage benefit, but its purpose determines the cost of losing it. A useful shortlist combines how much space it occupies with when you last needed it, whether its one-time task is finished, and whether you have a replacement.

Check store availability and maintenance separately. An unavailable app may deserve extra care if it contains irreplaceable information. A long gap between developer releases is a reason to investigate compatibility and continued usefulness, rather than proof that the installed app is broken.

Treat ratings the same way. A low score can prompt a closer look, but it cannot tell you whether a particular app remains necessary for your work or a device you own. The final decision belongs to the person who knows what the app is for.

Review suggestions on the Mac with Yado

For a longer list, connect the iPhone to the Mac with a cable, unlock it and accept the trust request if shown. Yado requires macOS 14 or later. In the Apps tab, the page is titled Manage Apps; choose Size to compare storage or Suggested to bring removal candidates forward.

Suggested rows lead with their reasons. The released interface includes Off the App Store, Unopened for 4 weeks, One-time use, an old-development warning, and low ratings. The rating reason requires a score below 3 with at least 20 ratings. Reasons affect the order, with size breaking equal scores, so Suggested is not another largest-first list.

The label No developer update in over a year needs careful interpretation. Yado derives that warning from the SDK used to build the installed app; it is a maintenance signal, not a live lookup of the developer's latest release date. Its Updated sort also uses the installed copy's last installation or update information, not the date of the newest version in the store.

Apps recorded as opened during the last four weeks receive no removal reasons. Without readable usage records, Yado can still use the phone's metadata and its catalog, but it cannot add the unopened reason. A recommendation's absence therefore does not prove that you use an app regularly.

Tick only the apps you intend to remove, click Uninstall in the footer, then review the confirmation. In Yado, Uninstall removes the app and its data, unlike Apple's data-preserving Offload App. Yado has no special protection for apps classified as essential services, so a banking or utility app still needs your judgment before selection.

The catalog is downloaded to the Mac and matched locally against the installed apps. The app list is not uploaded for matching. Usage records are also read and counted on the Mac rather than sent to a recommendation service.

Organize the Home Screen without removing apps

For a few icons, Apple's route is sufficient. Touch and hold an app, select Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library. You can also hide a whole page by holding an empty area, tapping the page dots, clearing that page's circle and tapping Done. Apple's Home Screen instructions cover both operations.

For a larger rearrangement in Yado, open Arrange Home Screen from Manage Apps. Choose Save Current Layout, give it a name and click Save before experimenting. Then choose Group into Folders by Category or Most Used on Page One, inspect the before-and-after preview and click Apply to iPhone.

Grouping puts apps with the same purpose into named folders and reuses a matching folder when one exists. Most Used ranks opens from the last four weeks, including apps inside folders, and puts the most-used choices in the last cells of page one, nearer the thumb. The Dock and widgets stay in place during these rearrangements.

There are two boundaries worth checking in the preview and on the phone. A layout write can bring apps kept only in App Library back onto the last page. Applying a named saved layout can also change the Dock, because that operation restores a layout rather than merely sorting its page icons.

Check the result and handle missing information

The four-week usage features need the iPhone's Screen Time shared to the Mac and Full Disk Access for Yado. On the iPhone, enable Share Across Devices in Settings, Screen Time. If Yado requests access, enable it under Privacy & Security, Full Disk Access on the Mac. Yado's notice explains that the first usage sync can take a few hours; no records should be treated as missing information, not evidence that every app is unused.

After uninstalling, inspect the phone's storage view again and check that the selected app has gone. If Yado's list needs updating, press Command-R in Apps. Failed removals remain selected; unlock the iPhone and review the error before trying again. Screen Time or device-management restrictions can prohibit deletion, and Yado does not bypass them.

After a Home Screen change, inspect page one, the last page, the Dock and widgets on the phone. Undo Last Change restores the layout before Yado's latest rearrangement, while choosing a saved layout by name switches back to that arrangement. Neither operation recovers deleted apps or their data. For the other tasks available from the same connection, see managing an iPhone from a Mac.

Yado manages your iPhone from the Mac over a cable: photos, duplicates, apps, files and local backups.
