How to clear Messages storage on iPhone without losing what matters

Storage · October 27, 2026 · 7 min read

To clear Messages storage on iPhone, save the attachments you want, then delete unwanted photos and videos inside the conversation. Check Settings, General, iPhone Storage first so you know whether Messages, WeChat or WhatsApp is using the space. Each app needs its own cleanup, and deleting Apple Messages content can also delete it from your other devices when Messages in iCloud is on.

Check which app is taking up storage

Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage, and open the app you want to investigate. Apple counts messages and their attachments under Messages, while third-party apps have their own app data. Record the app's size before changing anything, so you can compare the same number afterward.

Read any storage recommendations before enabling them. In particular, Offload App keeps documents and data, while Delete App removes the app and its related data, as Apple's storage guide explains. Offloading a chat app is therefore a poor match when the data is what you want to reduce.

If Messages is small and another category dominates, follow the broader iPhone storage cleanup guide instead of deleting conversations that you still need.

Save attachments and make a backup before deleting

In Messages, find a photograph or video you want to keep and tap the Save Photo button beside the photo or stack. Open Photos and check that you can find and open it. Apple's Messages sharing guide documents this save action.

For a copy on your computer, continue with transferring iPhone photos to a Mac. Open the saved file on the Mac before deleting its source. Saving to the phone's Photos library is useful for keeping a picture, but it is not the same outcome as storing a separate file on the Mac.

A local device backup is useful before cleaning conversations, with an important coverage limit. Apple excludes data already synced and stored in iCloud from computer backups, including iMessages, SMS and MMS messages. Do not assume that a successful backup contains every conversation or attachment visible on the phone.

For the free Apple route, connect the iPhone by cable, open Finder, select it and complete the trust prompts. Under General, select Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac, then use Back Up Now. Wait for completion and check the last-backup date and time, following Apple's backup instructions. The full Mac backup walkthrough covers encryption and its password requirements.

Keep that pre-cleanup state from being replaced. In Finder, open General, then Manage Backups, right-click the completed backup and choose Archive. Apple documents this in its backup-management guide.

If you already use Yado for backups, open Overview, click Manage on the backup card, then Start Backup. Wait for that backup to finish before cleaning. The same iCloud coverage limit still applies.

How Messages in iCloud affects storage

Messages in iCloud stores history in the cloud and keeps the most recently accessed messages locally, according to Apple's iCloud guide. The messages and accompanying attachments also count toward iCloud storage. Local storage can still be in use while cloud storage is in use.

That explains why enabling sync does not mean Messages must disappear from the iPhone's storage list. Judge the result by the phone's storage reading, rather than expecting the cloud total and phone total to match.

Deletion also syncs. If you remove a message on one device, the change appears on other devices using Messages in iCloud. A conversation visible in Messages on your Mac is therefore not an independent copy to rely on before deleting it on the phone. Save the files you need outside the conversation first.

Delete unwanted attachments inside Messages

For the iOS 26 route in Apple's attachment-cleanup instructions, work inside the conversation.

  1. Open Messages and choose a conversation.
  2. Tap the contact's name at the top, then Photos.
  3. Tap Edit, then Select Photos.
  4. Select the unwanted items after reviewing them.
  5. Tap Delete, then Delete Attachment to confirm.

Start with one conversation whose content you recognize. This keeps the decision tied to the sender and context, rather than treating every attachment as disposable. Apple's own tools are enough for this task; you do not need a Mac app to delete Messages attachments.

Choose a retention period for future messages

In iOS 26, open Settings, Apps, Messages, then Keep Messages under Message History. You can retain messages for 30 days, a year, or forever. Apple's deletion guide explains that a timed choice automatically removes older conversations, including their attachments.

Use a shorter period only when that age rule fits your history. If you want to keep old written conversations while removing selected pictures, retain them indefinitely and use selective attachment deletion instead. Changing retention is an ongoing deletion rule, so make the preservation decision before shortening it.

Clear WeChat storage inside WeChat

WeChat and other third-party chat apps keep files in their own app storage. Apple's sandboxing documentation explains that each third-party app has its own home directory and restricted access to other apps' data. Cleaning Apple Messages does not address the files that WeChat keeps for its chats.

Yado's Clean tab provides a WeChat row when WeChat's data reaches 1 GB. It shows WeChat's data size and a Clear in WeChat action. That action displays instructions; it does not delete chats or files over the cable.

Yado's instructions point to Me, Settings, General, then Storage inside WeChat; in the Chinese interface that is 我, 设置, 通用, 存储空间. Review the choices there before confirming a deletion. Yado leaves this data alone because only WeChat knows which files its chats still use.

Review WhatsApp media in its storage manager

WhatsApp's current iPhone storage instructions show its overall usage after you tap your profile picture, then Storage and data, then Manage storage. For one conversation, open the chat, tap its name, then Manage storage to see that chat's media sorted from largest to smallest. Review items before deleting them; WhatsApp says items deleted there cannot be downloaded again from the chat.

WhatsApp warns that its numbers and the phone's may not match. Compare each reading with its own earlier value. It also notes that every copy of an item needs deleting to free the space, and that items removed from WhatsApp may still be saved elsewhere on the device. Check what remains before assuming another copy should go too.

Check the result and recover mistakes

Return to the same app's entry in iPhone Storage and compare it with your starting reading. Check the attachments or exported files you kept as well. A lower number is useful only if the content you meant to preserve is still available.

For a mistaken Messages deletion, open the conversation list, tap the filter button and choose Recently Deleted. Select the conversation, tap Recover, then Recover Messages. The iOS 26 recovery guide gives a recovery window of up to 30 days. Permanent deletion cannot be undone.

To inspect a backup made with Yado before cleanup, open Overview and the backup card's Manage button. Under Existing Backups, hover over the correct dated row and click Browse Contents. Enter the backup password if encrypted, then open Messages and a conversation to read its records.

Export Text saves a conversation as a .txt transcript. Attachments may appear as an attachment marker, so that transcript does not preserve the actual photos and videos. Verify a known passage and date, and keep separately saved media alongside the backup. The backup browsing guide explains the supported records and missing-content limits.

Yado manages your iPhone from the Mac over a cable: photos, duplicates, apps, files and local backups.
